Oregon QB Says A&M?s Manziel Plays ?Backyard Football?

mariota-manzielSo maybe his nickname should be Johnny Backyard Football.? At least that?s what Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota seems to think.

Judging by the comments on a couple of Aggie messageboards, the Ducks? QB seems to have ruffled some feathers ? pun intended ? when he described Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel?s game as ?backyard football.?

?For a lot of us, it?s how we were introduced to the game ? just going out and making plays.? I?d like to do that.? It would be fun.? But it would be outside of my calling here.?

?

Now, personally I don?t see what?s so inflammatory about that comment.? Granted, Manziel was once committed to Oregon and perhaps there?s a bit of history between the two signal-callers, but this seems to be a case of looking for trash talk.

Mariota simply alluded to the differences between his role in Eugene and Manziel?s role in College Station.? And judging by that Heisman Trophy he picked up in December, Manziel seems to fit his role perfectly.

Stay tuned, but I don?t think Aggie fans should be losing any sleep over this one.

Rogen, Wiig join 'Arrested Development'

Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig will guest star on "Arrested Development."

By Philiana Ng, The Hollywood Reporter

"Arrested Development" is adding two high-profile guest stars. Kristen Wiig and Seth Rogen will be making appearances when the comedy launches its new episodes on Netflix in May, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Though Netflix would not comment on who they are playing specifically, Vulture reported Tuesday that Wiig?would be playing a young Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter).

Each episode will revolve around a different character, kicking off with Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman).

The majority of the "Arrested Development" cast came together in January during Television Critics Association's winter press tour to tout the show's return, and yes, they still have plans for a follow-up movie. (The beloved comedy had been axed by Fox after three seasons in 2006.)

"This is the first act of what we would like to complete in a movie," creator Mitch Hurwitz said at the time. "These are episodes that set that up. One does not work without the other."

Other big-name stars who will be hanging out with the Bluths include Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter, John Slattery, Terry Crews and Isla Fisher.

All episodes will launch at the same time in May on Netflix.

Are you looking forward to the new episodes of "Arrested Development"? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Long memories in brain activity explain streaks in individual behavior

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Even with a constant task, human performance fluctuates in time-scales from seconds to minutes in a fractal manner. In a recent study a Finnish research group found that the individual variability in the brain dynamics as indexed by the neuronal scaling laws predicted the individual behavioral variability and the conscious detection of very weak sensory stimuli. These data indicate that individual neuronal dynamics underlie the individual variability in human cognition and performance. Results may also have a strong impact in understanding the neuronal mechanism of neuropsychiatric diseases in which behavioral dynamics are abnormal.

Human performance in cognitive tasks varies from moment-to-moment so that the similar behavioral performance is clustered into streaks. The neuronal dynamics underlying this behavioral variability has remained unknown.

Similar scale-free and power-law distributed? ?avalanche dynamics? is observed in many natural systems such as sand piles, earthquakes, gene regulation, and also brain activity. However, the functional significance of the neuronal scale-free behavior has remained unknown. It is also unclear whether it is just epiphenomena without any further significance.?

"We investigated whether the individual variability in the scaling-laws governing the detection of auditory and visual stimuli presented in the threshold of detection could be predicted by the variability in the neuronal scaling laws, explains Matias Palva," project leader in the Neuroscience Center of the University of Helsinki, Finland.

The researchers used magneto- and electroencephalography to record non-invasively human brain activity during the task performance. They found that both the behavioral and neuronal dynamics were characterized by scale-free dynamics. Individual variability in the neuronal scaling laws predicted the individual scaling laws in behavioral performance.

"These results suggest that the individual behavioral and psychophysical variability in task performance is largely a result of the inherent variability in the individual neuronal dynamics," says project leader Satu Palva.

Why Do We Give Chocolate on Valentine's Day? - The Fact Site

On the 14th of February, it is Valentine?s Day. A working holiday, it is celebrated worldwide. While seemingly over commercialised, the sales of many items, such as aftershave/perfume, big red balloons, cards, chocolate, jewellery, lingerie and plush toys sky rocket (along with the prices).

These gifts are almost seen as traditional.

February is also a time when chocolate factories reach an all-time high, and the sales increase.

But why do we give chocolate?

Chocolate is supposed to symbolise affection, attraction, deep love, luxury, passion and sensuality. Some scientists have undertaken various studies and seen that chocolate is also an aphrodisiac, which means, "a food or drink, or a drug, that stimulates sexual desire".

It increases the desire and energy levels. Endorphins are released. And as Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods said in Legally Blonde (2001) said, ?Endorphins make you happy.?

Chocolate comes from "theobroma cacao" tree, which in Greek translates as to "food for the Gods". People see this message and realise that if it?s good enough for the Gods, it must be good for my boy/girlfriend.

It has a huge psychological and emotional effect on people. It can show a sincere apology, express delight and happiness, initiate desire, reflect love, rekindle friendships and uplift morale.

With all these benefits to humans and an incredible taste, why shouldn?t you give chocolate to someone you hold near and dear to you this Valentine?

Interestingly, there is a tradition in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, known as White Day. On the 14th February, women give men their gifts. On the 14th March the men then give their gifts, usually, white chocolate chip cookies, jewellery, white chocolate, white lingerie and marshmallows. A general rule states that the return gift should be double, or triple the cost of the Valentine gift.

Video: Backlash after critic calls actress ?a female hippo?

    >>> now to a controversy about a movie critics comments on melissa mccarthy and what society says about overweight people.

    >> reporter: melissa mccarthy , an emmy-award-winning actress for the sitcom mike and molly and an award nominee for the 2011 movie "bridesmaids." the co her talents are on display in the movie "identity thief" having a strong opening. when the veteran critic rex read panned the movie, he zeroed in on her physical appearance, called her tractor size, female hippo and missed her career as a stud any in being obese.

    >> it is completely below the belt . her weight has nothing to do with the quality of the film and rex reed should be a shamed of this review.

    >> he said the movie is dreadful but the weight issue is the sole reason it exists. they criticize her. melissa mccarthy has some of the best timing around and all you can think about is the body type. we both know if she was a man, you wouldn't think of calling her fat. her representatives wouldn't comment. last year, she told good house keeping, sometimes i wish i were just magically a size 6 and i never had to give it a single thought. but i'm weirdly healthy. so i don't beat myself up about it.

    >> i didn't know this was going to be this long.

    >> reporter: reed's review came the same week that new jersey governor, chris christie went on " david letterman " to confront the issue of his weight head-on.

    >> i'm basically the healthiest fat guy you have ever seen.

    >> reporter: leading some to wonder if weight is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices.

    >> i have put on a little bit of weight.

    >> it is still acceptable to make fun of overweight people in a way you wouldn't make efun of a person of color or make fun of somebody because of their sexuality.

Oil falls below $96 after early rise

(AP) ? Oil prices slipped back below $96 a barrel Friday afternoon, reversing course after rising earlier in the day.

Benchmark crude for March delivery fell 11 cents to finish at $95.72 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It rose as high as $96.57 in the morning.

U.S., drivers still can't catch a break at the pump. The average price for a gallon (3.8 liters) of gas rose a penny to $3.57. That's up 27 cents from a month ago and 8 cents more than last year at this time.

Drivers in Massachusetts who are filling up ahead of a massive blizzard that could dump up to 3 feet (nearly 1 meter) of snow are paying an average of $3.69, while the average pump price in New York is $3.92 a gallon. Local television coverage showed lines of cars at gas stations reminiscent of those seen after Superstorm Sandy.

Once they fill up and stock up on groceries, many people in the Northeast might not drive again for a day or more. Demand for gasoline should drop, supplies should rise and prices in the region should drop a bit, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for Oil Price Information Service.

"The simple impact (these storms) have is that they destroy demand for a period of time," Kloza says.

The brunt of the storm is not expected to hit refineries around New York and Philadelphia the way that Superstorm Sandy did, so no supply disruptions are expected. If New England ports get snowed in for a few days, it could delay shipments of gasoline by barge, which could lead to reduced supplies, Kloza says.

The storm could bring a break in gasoline prices after a steady march upward in recent weeks. Kloza thinks that later in February and in March prices will rise as they do most years, but perhaps not as fast, because prices have already climbed so high.

"We were in an uptrend but clearly it was too brisk," he said. "The market borrowed some of the increases that usually come in February and March."

Oil rose initially after a report showing that China's trade growth surged in January. Exports soared 25 percent from a year earlier and import growth rocketed to 28 percent.

Analysts said the year-on-year data could be distorted because the Lunar New Year holidays fell in January in 2012. Last year companies picked up pace in January to fill orders before shutting down for the holiday, which this year falls in February.

And the Commerce Department said Friday that the U.S. trade deficit fell nearly 21 percent in December from November, as oil imports plummeted. That's the smallest trade deficit in nearly three years. The smaller trade gap means the economy probably performed better in the fourth quarter than first estimated last week.

But those gains evaporated in the afternoon.

In London, Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose $1.66 to end at $118.90 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 6 cents to finish at $3.06 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 1 cent to end at $3.27 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil gained 4 cents to finish at $3.24 a gallon.

Self-Esteem Comes From Good Decisions | Healing Choices Blog

Lately I?ve been hearing a lot about self-esteem and the lack thereof.

Here?s my definition of self-esteem. Make good decisions that impact your well-being in a positive way.

Someone who has good self-esteem acts in a way that requires people (including themselves) to respect them and treat them well. People with good self-esteem have good boundaries.

People with poor self-esteem often make poor decisions, and by that I mean they make decisions that impact their own well-being in a negative way.

How do you improve your self-esteem? Make better decisions. Decide to treat yourself better.

Of course, in order to do this, you have to think well of yourself. How do you do this? Focus on the positive. Not in a ?I?m the greatest person in the world,? delusional kind of way, but in a ?I?m worthy of love and respect, just as every other being on the planet is,? kind of way.

We want others to treat us well, so we treat them well. But in order to be treated well by others, we have to treat ourselves well.

If others think you are a doormat (because you behave like a doormat,) they will treat you like a doormat. It would be nice if people stopped taking advantage of your good nature, but if you can?t be bothered to protect yourself, why should they?

If you want to know how your self-esteem is, pay attention to what you say to others. How many times a day do you apologize? What are you apologizing for? For taking up space in the room?

I was recently on a conference call with a group of people and three of the people who responded to a question immediately apologized for speaking up. Then, after speaking, two of them asked the group if they were making sense. They spoke coherently and in English. Why would they think they weren?t making sense?

This may seem like an insignificant example, but I think it is a sign of a bigger problem.

If I?m apologizing to my colleagues at work and my teenager questions me at home when I tell him he can?t do something I consider dangerous, I?m more likely to cave on my decision if he?s insistent (as only teenagers can be!) I haven?t developed any trust in myself or my own authority, so I give in too easily.

A small, insignificant bad decision can start a cascade that leads to bigger and bigger bad decisions.

Many years ago, I waited tables with a woman told me she had ?low self-esteem.? She got involved with a man who turned out to be physically abusive and, oh yeah, a drug dealer. Did she leave him? No. Not until they had a child together and the child was taken away from her because of her involvement with this man. She started making different decisions, ?raised? her self-esteem, and got her child back.

What?s your definition of self-esteem? Tell me what you think in the comments.

Turkey says tests confirm leftist bombed U.S. embassy

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A member of a Turkish leftist group that accuses Washington of using Turkey as its "slave" carried out a suicide bomb attack on the U.S. embassy, the Ankara governor's office cited DNA tests as showing on Saturday.

Ecevit Sanli, a member of the leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Army-Front (DHKP-C), blew himself up in a perimeter gatehouse on Friday as he tried to enter the embassy, also killing a Turkish security guard.

The DHKP-C, virulently anti-American and listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and Turkey, claimed responsibility in a statement on the internet in which it said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was a U.S. "puppet".

"Murderer America! You will not run away from people's rage," the statement on "The People's Cry" website said, next to a picture of Sanli wearing a black beret and military-style clothes and with an explosives belt around his waist.

It warned Erdogan that he too was a target.

Turkey is an important U.S. ally in the Middle East with common interests ranging from energy security to counter-terrorism. Leftist groups including the DHKP-C strongly oppose what they see as imperialist U.S. influence over their nation.

DNA tests confirmed that Sanli was the bomber, the Ankara governor's office said. It said he had fled Turkey a decade ago and was wanted by the authorities.

Born in 1973 in the Black Sea port city of Ordu, Sanli was jailed in 1997 for attacks on a police station and a military staff college in Istanbul, but his sentence was deferred after he fell sick during a hunger strike. He was never re-jailed.

Condemned to life in prison in 2002, he fled the country a year later, officials said. Interior Minister Muammer Guler said he had re-entered Turkey using false documents.

Erdogan, who said hours after the attack that the DHKP-C were responsible, met his interior and foreign ministers as well as the head of the army and state security service in Istanbul on Saturday to discuss the bombing.

Three people were detained in Istanbul and Ankara in connection with the attack, state broadcaster TRT said.

The White House condemned the bombing as an "act of terror", while the U.N. Security Council described it as a heinous act. U.S. officials said on Friday the DHKP-C were the main suspects but did not exclude other possibilities.

Islamist radicals, extreme left-wing groups, ultra-nationalists and Kurdish militants have all carried out attacks in Turkey in the past.

    SYRIA

The DHKP-C statement called on Washington to remove Patriot missiles, due to go operational on Monday as part of a NATO defense system, from Turkish soil.

The missiles are being deployed alongside systems from Germany and the Netherlands to guard Turkey, a NATO member, against a spillover of the war in neighboring Syria.

"Our action is for the independence of our country, which has become a new slave of America," the statement said.

Turkey has been one of the leading advocates of foreign intervention to end the civil war in Syria and has become one of President Bashar al-Assad's harshest critics, a stance groups such as the DHKP-C view as submission to an imperialist agenda.

"Organizations of the sectarian sort like the DHKP-C have been gaining ground as a result of circumstances surrounding the Syrian civil war," security analyst Nihat Ali Ozcan wrote in a column in Turkey's Daily News.

The Ankara attack was the second on a U.S. mission in four months. On September 11, 2012, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three American personnel were killed in an Islamist militant attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The DHKP-C was responsible for the assassination of two U.S. military contractors in the early 1990s in protest against the first Gulf War, and it fired rockets at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul in 1992, according to the U.S. State Department.

It has been blamed for previous suicide attacks, including one in 2001 that killed two police officers and a tourist in Istanbul's central Taksim Square. It has carried out a series of deadly attacks on police stations in the last six months.

Friday's attack may have come in retaliation for an operation against the DHKP-C last month in which Turkish police detained 85 people. A court subsequently remanded 38 of them in custody over links to the group.

A California man said he created the hoax in which former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o fell for a fake, online girlfriend because he was in love with the football player.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo spoke publicly for the first time in an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw for the "Dr. Phil Show," the first part of which aired Thursday.

The 22-year-old Tuiasosopo said he built the online persona of Lennay Kekua, a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell for without ever meeting in person and later believed to have died of leukemia.

Tuiasosopo said he felt Kekua was a part of him, and grew feelings and emotions for Te'o that he could not control. He acknowledged that the hoax was cruel, but said it was never intended as a joke and that he got no financial gain from it.

"I pretty much had this escape of Lennay and this was where my heart had pretty much invested, not just time, but all of my energy went into this," he said.

"As twisted and confusing as it may be, yeah, I cared for this person," he said, referring to Te'o. "I did all that I could to help this person become a better person, even though I wasn't getting nothing out of it."

When the ruse was reported by Deadspin.com on Jan. 16, the report raised the questions about whether Te'o was involved. The story about how the All-American played through pain learning about the deaths of his girlfriend and grandmother on the same day led to an outpouring of support from Notre Dame fans. It became the backdrop to the Fighting Irish's undefeated regular season and run to the BCS championship, where they lost to Alabama.

Tuiasosopo said Te'o knew nothing of the hoax, and doesn't believe he ever suspected Kekua wasn't real.

"He had no involvement," Tuiasosopo said. "He did not know anything."

Te'o won seven national awards for his play and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He has denied any involvement from the beginning, and Notre Dame said an investigation of the player's claims backed up his story.

But Tuiasosopo said he felt Te'o became a better person as a result of the relationship.

"If you really look at all his interviews, he felt that," he said. "When he was under the understanding that he lost her, he realized all the good that Lennay had done for him."

Through a spokesman, the Te'o family declined comment.

Tuisasosopo said he decided to confess to Te'o earlier this month as the hoax was unraveling because he felt he could not go any further with his own life until the truth was out.

"You've heard of recovering drug addicts? It takes a lot of courage to stand and say that," he said "To recover from homosexuality and this type of thing. Not only that, coming back to your real life, as hard as a task as that is I'm going to do all that I can to live right."

McGraw said that statement bothered him.

"I hope it's a pressure you don't put on yourself," he said.

Tuiasosopo said he killed the Kekua character on the day in September Te'o learned his grandmother died, following an argument with Te'o.

The football star had told Kekua he didn't need her, Tuiasosopo said.

"It hurt me," he said. "It hit me like a brick wall. I was like, 'Whoa, I've given so much into this. And I realized right then in that moment, that I poured so much into Lennay, that I myself was getting nothing, and look what I was left with."

Te'o said he first learned that something was amiss when Keuka called him on Dec. 6, and told him she had faked her death.

He told his parents about what had happened while home for Christmas break and called Notre Dame coaches on Dec. 26 to let them know. Notre Dame officials said that they interviewed Te'o and retained Stroz Friedberg, a New York computer forensics firm, to investigate the case. They learned on Jan. 3 that there were no records indicating Lennay Kekua existed.

Tuiasosopo said he was the voice of Kekua but initially refused to recreate it when pressed by McGraw. He eventually agreed to do the voice behind a privacy screen, something McGraw promised to show during part two of the interview on Friday.
