Maine set to ring wedding bells for same-sex couples

(Reuters) - Same-sex couples in Maine were counting down the hours on Friday until the first wedding bells were due to ring, less than two months after state residents approved gay marriage in a historic vote.

The city clerk's office in Portland, the state's largest city with a metropolitan population of 250,000, planned to open a minute after midnight and stay open for three hours to accommodate same-sex couples rushing to wed. City clerk offices in Maine typically are closed on Saturdays.

Along with voters in Maryland and Washington state, Maine residents approved same-sex unions on November 6, Election Day, becoming the only states to pass such a measure by popular vote.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. now have legalized gay marriage. Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments banning it.

In Bangor, Maine, the city clerk's office was planning to be open on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for residents to obtain marriage licenses.

The Brunswick town clerk's office was set to be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday by appointment and, as of midday on Friday, five same-sex couples had booked appointments, the office said.

Same-sex weddings are being booked starting in the spring at the On the Marsh Bistro in Kennebunk, said owner Denise Rubin.

"We support it wholeheartedly," she said. "We look forward to being part of a whole new wave of wonderful thinking."

The tide of public opinion has been shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. In May, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to say he believed same-sex couples should be allowed to get married.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The nation's highest court said this month it will review a case against a federal law that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive.

It also will look at a challenge to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, which voters narrowly approved in 2008.

Washington state's law legalizing same-sex unions took effect on Sunday, December 9, and Maryland's law takes effect on January 1, 2013.

A Pew Research Center survey from October found 49 percent of Americans favored allowing gay marriage, with 40 percent opposed.

Applicant-Initiated Interviews at Tuck School of Business | Stacy ...

Tuck School of BusinessDid you know that Dartmouth?s Tuck School of Business offers applicants the chance to initiate an interview with admissions? Unlike it?s peer schools, which typically maintain an invitation-only policy, Tuck?s Open Interview Policy means that any applicant who wants to visit the school and interview with the admissions committee may do so.

In a video message posted to the Tuck School website, Director of Admissions Dawna Clarke explains that interviews are so helpful for the admissions committee in order to assess those valuable interpersonal skills, team skills, leadership skills, and of course, communication skills.

Applicants want the opportunity to be heard, and Tuck is proud to be able to offer that opportunity to any applicant who requests it, Clarke says, noting that ?An interview really helps us get a sense of your personality and softer skills that are a little harder to assess on the basis of a written application.?

The interviews are with either second-year students or a member of the admissions committee, and applicants have the opportunity to sit in on a class, have lunch with a second-year student, tour the facilities, and participate in an information session with an AdCom member during their visit.

For applicants unable to visit Tuck and take advantage of the open interview option, Clarke explains that they would need to briefly explain the reason on their application and wait for the admissions committee invitation to interview, which is issued after an initial review of a candidate?s application.

According to Tuck, on-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members and selected second-year students. Off-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members, admissions associates, or alumni interviewers. All interviews are evaluated equally, regardless of interviewer, location, or how initiated.

Applicants should note that with the exception of the January round, interviews must be completed by the published deadline for the round in which you are applying. Because the January round deadline is 1/3/13, the applicant-initiated interview deadline is January 31st.

Syrian interior minister leaves Beirut hospital

BEIRUT (AP) ? Officials at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport say Syria's interior minister has been released from a hospital and is flying home aboard a private jet.

The officials said Mohammed al-Shaar left Beirut on Wednesday and is on his way to Damascus. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations,

Al-Shaar was wounded on Dec. 12 when a suicide bomber exploded his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including the minister.

The Syrian government denied at first that al-Shaar was wounded. Then it emerged that he was brought to a Beirut hospital last week for treatment.

The same minister was wounded when a bomb went off on July 18 during a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top officials.

UN adds about 5 percent to budget for 2012-2013

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The U.N. General Assembly approved an increase of about 5 percent to cover the United Nations' regular operations in 2012-2013 on Monday evening, raising the two-year budget to about $5.4 billion but delaying action on a key proposal that would allow greater mobility of U.N. staff.

It took the U.N.'s budget committee until Monday afternoon to reach agreement on a host of budget-related issues after meeting all weekend. The 193-member world body finally voted by consensus on Christmas Eve to increase the budget by about $243.3 million from the $5.15 billion agreed on last December.

More than half the increase is due to additional costs for some of the 33 special U.N. political missions which include U.N. envoys for Syria, Yemen, Libya and Sudan-South Sudan and large operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon failed to win assembly approval for a key proposal ? allowing the U.N. Secretariat greater flexibility to move staff from headquarters to the field. Negotiators said they came close to agreement, but the issue was delayed until the General Assembly meets again in March.

The assembly also approved new rates that all U.N. members pay for the regular budget.

China, Russia, Brazil and other countries with growing economies will have to pay an increased share, European Union contributions will drop, and the U.S. ceiling for the regular budget will remain the same at 22 percent.

U.S. deputy ambassador Joseph Torsella said the United States "is pleased by the significant progress we were able to achieve toward advancing fiscal discipline during a period of significant global financial difficulty and setting the United Nations on the path of increased efficiency."

The United States is also pleased to have kept the 22 percent ceiling and to have negotiated a budget outline for 2014-2015 "that instills real financial discipline by keeping the U.N. budget level constant over several years," he said.

The budget includes a first-ever pay freeze for New York-based staff for six months, and Torsella said the United States will try to extend it because "it is important that member states finally recognize that 'business as usual' cannot continue in the current financial climate."

ETFs for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) | ETF Trends

While investors have jumped into real estate investment trusts and exchange traded funds to cash in on the attractive yields, REITs prices have edged higher, causing some to take pause from a valuation standpoint.

The MSCI U.S. REIT Index has gained an average 19% per year over the past three years, including dividends, reports Tom Lauricella for the Wall Street Journal.

?U.S. REITs look less attractive to us now than they have over the last 10 years,? Richard Levine, one of the portfolio managers of the Neuberger Berman Equity Income Fund, said in the article. ?As people have looked for the next source of yield they?ve found REITs, so they?ve done nicely. But that?s been pushing valuations to levels which are unattractive in some cases.?

REITs operate a range of real estate properties, such as hotels, hospitals, apartments and storage units, among others. To receive favorable taxes, REIT companies are required to distribute 90% of their taxable income to share holders, which is why REITs provide such attractive yields. [Mortgage REIT ETFs Fighting the Fed]

The asset class is typically valued in comparing prices to adjusted funds from operation, or AFFO, a type of net-income use for real estate. According to Green Street Advisors, REITs are trading at 18 times their stock prices using a three-year forward AFFO, compared to an average of 15 times since 1998.

While valuations may be a cause for concern, fund managers and analysts are not overly bearish. REITs still benefit from the low interest rate environment, little new construction and positive economic growth.

The REITs market has also benefited from the slowly recovering real estate market. Additionally, some investors have used commercial real estate as a way to hedge against inflation ? as landlords, REITs operators can just raise the rents during inflationary periods. [?Steady Diet? of Real Estate ETFs Can Help Boost Yield]

Some REIT ETFs include:

  • Vanguard REIT ETF (NYSEArca: VNQ): 3.41% yield
  • SPDR Jow Jones REIT ETF (NYSEArca: RWR): 3.10% yield
  • iShares FTSE NAREIT Real Estate 50 Index Fund (NYSEArca: FTY): 3.66% yield
  • First Trust S&P REIT Index Fund (NYSEArca: FRI): 2.36% yield

CBS dominates week in TV ratings

NEW YORK (AP) ? CBS had little competition for dominance last week in the television ratings.

The network had 17 of the 25 most-watched programs on the air last week, according to the Nielsen company. It beat second-place NBC by an average of nearly four million viewers a night last week, and also took the 18-to-49-year-old demographic that advertisers seek.

"60 Minutes" and "NCIS" were the most popular shows on CBS last week. As is typical in the fall, NBC's Sunday night football matchup was the week's most-watched show.

One end-of-year tradition, Barbara Walters' survey of the year's most popular personalities, finished No. 27 in the week's ratings with 7.6 million viewers.

On cable, Showtime's "Dexter" and "Homeland" both hit series records for their season finale episodes on Sunday. "Dexter" had 2.8 million viewers and "Homeland" had 2.3 million. Showtime preceded each episode with a disclaimer, warning that audiences might find the shows too intense so soon after the Connecticut school killings.

CBS averaged 11.9 million viewers for the week in prime time (7.3 rating, 12 share). NBC had 7.3 million (4.5, 7), ABC had 5.1 million (3.3, 5), Fox had 4.4 million (2.7, 4), the CW had 1.7 million (1.1, 2) and ION Television had 1.3 million (0.9, 1).

Among the Spanish language networks, Univision led with an average of 3.2 million viewers (1.7, 3). Telemundo had 1.3 million (0.7, 1), TeleFutura had 850,000 (0.4, 1), Estrella had 340,000 (0.2, 0) and Azteca had 140,000 (0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.4 million viewers (6.3, 12). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.3 million (5.5, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.2 million viewers (4.9, 9).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Dec. 10-16, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NFL Football: San Francisco at New England, NBC, 23.23 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 19.63 million; "NCIS," CBS, 17.65 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 16.74 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 15.12 million; "Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick," NBC, 14.62 million; "Person of Interest," CBS, 14.08 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 13.34 million; "The Voice" (Monday), NBC, 12.33 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 12.01 million.

Why 'The Help' star Brandy Chastain took a turn into killing-bin ...

"Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar-winning Iraq war film "The Hurt Locker," details the hunt for, and assassination of, Osama bin Laden.

As you may expect, "ZDT," which opens in limited release Wednesday, already has generated a lot of controversy.

First, right-wing critics complained that, while researching the subject, Bigelow and her "Hurt Locker" screenwriter, journalist Mark Boal, were given undue access to classified information and were making a pro-Obama propaganda film. More recently, some left-leaning pundits have groused that "ZDT" depicts enhanced interrogation techniques such as waterboarding as useful tools in the fight against terrorism.

Those who've actually seen the movie, though, have come out rather universally praising lead actor Jessica Chastain. The 35-year-old redhead - who broke out last year with half a dozen acclaimed performances in films such as "Take Shelter," "The Tree of Life" and "The Help" - plays Maya, a determined CIA analyst who, after many years, figures out exactly where the al-Qaida leader is hiding in Pakistan.

Based on a real person, Maya sacrifices any personal life to be focused on and consumed by her work - and the warm, chatty Chastain, who is currently headlining the Broadway revival of "The Heiress," clearly had to act like hell to portray her.

Chastain, who Wednesday received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for best lead actress, followed on Thursday by a Golden Globe

nod for her performance, discussed the unique challenges of making this most unusual war film in Beverly Hills last week.

Q: You were committed to another film when Kathryn called and asked you to read Mark Boal's screenplay. What about it prompted you to sign on to "Zero Dark Thirty" instead?

A: I started reading the script and I couldn't stop. Because it's a true story, it was fascinating, like reading an article -- but also, watching the arc of this character, this woman who gave up everything for this. I was so moved by her story that I felt I just had to be there, so whatever it takes.

Q: What intrigued you about Maya?

A: I've never played a part like this before. I'm a very, like, sensitive girl. I grew up in Northern California, kind of like a hippie. I've made Terrence Malick films, which are all about the heart space. I've made a lot of movies where the character was led by her heart: Celia Foote in "The Help" is an example.

This is a woman who is trained to be unemotional on the job and analytically precise. I've never really done anything like that -- especially since I've been trained to be emotional in my line of work (laughs). But what I loved so much about what Mark did is that he wrote as honest a portrayal of this woman as possible, based on the real woman. But also, what I loved was, when you are in shocking situations and you have to smother your reactions, at some point it's going to come out in an unhealthy way. When she, basically, blackmails her boss, it's like this almost crazy amount of emotion. I was really, really excited about the challenge of that.

Q: While filming in India and Jordan, you wallpapered your hotel suite with the same terrorist photos Maya pins up in her office. Sounds like she took over Jessica a little bit.

A: Shooting in that part of the world wasn't the most fun, feeling cut off from friends and family. I wanted to get in that head space, though. Me and Maya have a lot of differences, of course. But the one similarity that we do have is that I love my work, so I can understand that. However, my work doesn't change who I am, I don't become a slave to my work, I can still recognize myself. Whereas, at the end of the movie, she can't recognize herself anymore.

Q: Some of the characters in the movie are composites, but Maya is based on one, still-undercover CIA operative whom you were not permitted to meet or identify. That must have added an interesting dimension to the job.

A: There was the challenge of playing a real woman who you can't give away. So I worked for three months with Mark Boal, whom I nicknamed the professor, and I basically went to school. Any question I could possibly think of asking, I asked. Things like, I wanted to know who everyone was in each scene, related to me and what their jobs were and how long they were in the CIA. That way, I could tell how to speak to each person in a certain way because of their status.

And I needed to know all of the CIA verbiage; that was an incredible challenge. And also, all of the Arabic names. At first, I didn't think about it, but there are a lot of them in there, and she would have to pronounce them right.

Overall, the text was so thick, I had to say it in a way that made it sound like I knew what I was talking about, which meant I had to speak it very fast with names and facts and data.

Q: And though, of course, it was all make-believe, filming the torture scenes Maya observes couldn't have been easy.

A: Yeah, very difficult. The other day, somebody brought up a quote I'd said about being vegan, "I don't want to torture anything in my life." It's a quote that has been out there for years, and now you see me in this room torturing someone! (Laughs) But I'm acting, everyone, I'm acting.

But yeah, I hated shooting that stuff. We shot in an active Jordanian prison, which made the whole environment really heavy. It was an open-air prison; we had to get searched at the gate and couldn't have our cellphones or anything. It was tense, like if something happens, I don't want to be in here.

There was a week there. And because I was playing a character who wasn't free with her emotions, there was a lot of having to hide my impulses. I felt like I was in a straitjacket. There is one scene where we were feeding the prisoner for the first time, outside. In the middle of that scene, I had to actually walk away from the group and I had a good cry. I went behind a building and we actually had to stop shooting for a few minutes. I think it was because I'm used to someone who, when they feel something, I can express it, and I was playing a character who's not allowed to. So it just had to come out in some way.

Q: Kathryn Bigelow certainly does not make girly movies. But did having a woman directing ameliorate making this very tough story at all?

A: She is a great captain. You need the director to be the captain, strong; otherwise, other people come up and it gets oversaturated with opinions. She was very clear about the story she wanted to tell, didn't want to sentimentalize anything. But I know that a lot of it was difficult for her because she's a compassionate person.

During the week that we were filming the interrogations, we sent each other videos of animals being rescued. It was so emotional for me because I rescue dogs and so does she. That's the kind of stuff that was going on behind the scenes. Like, this is not our lives, we are not these characters, there's a place that is waiting for us.

Q: Lame as it might be to ask, I wonder if Kathryn ever related to Maya as a female in a very male, often testosterone-fueled, business.

A: We never talked about that. So many people in Hollywood experience it; I'm used to being the only woman on set. A lot of movies, most of the parts are written for men, most of the crews are men. Someone in makeup or costume might be a woman, but for the most part, I understand what it is to be in a career that is dominated by men, where they have the majority of jobs.

But Kathryn and I never talked about that in terms of Maya. One thing I didn't realize until we finished shooting the film, though, is that Kathryn and Maya do share something: They never stop and talk about how hard it is to be a woman in a man's world. Maya never has the speech when she's talking to a superior about "You're not taking me seriously because I'm a woman," or she never talks about the glass ceiling in the CIA. All she cares about is doing her job and getting what she wants. All of that stuff is a distraction from her job.

Kathryn's the same way. She never talks about the hardships of being a female director. So, on a set, you just think that she's an amazing director and never think that she's a woman. At the end of the day, it goes to show that if you're good at your job, people stop seeing the sex.

Russell Wilson soars as Seahawks rout Bills 50-17

TORONTO (AP) ? Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are not only surging toward a playoff berth. They showed they can pile up the points on either side of the border.

A week after a 58-0 win at home against Arizona, Wilson ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in a 50-17 rout of the Bills in Buffalo's annual game in Toronto on Sunday. Wilson's scores all came in the first half.

The Seahawks' opportunistic defense then took over by forcing three consecutive turnovers to start the second half, including safety Earl Thomas scoring on 57-yard interception return.

The 108 combined points over two weeks matched the NFL's third-highest total. The New England Patriots also scored 108 points in consecutive games last month, according to STATS. And the Seahawks became the NFL's third team to score 50 points in consecutive weeks, joining the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants, who both did it in 1950, according to STATS.

In winning for the fifth time in six games, the Seahawks (9-5) inched closer to clinching a playoff berth and still aren't out of the running to win the NFC West. They return home to host division-leading San Francisco in what's become a key showdown.

Wilson, the rookie third-round draft pick, scored on 14-, 25- and 13-yard runs to become the NFL's first quarterback to run for three scores in one half since Daunte Culpepper did it against Chicago on Sept. 3, according to STATS. And Wilson's 4-yard touchdown pass to Zach Miller was his 21st of the season, moving into a tie for second with Cam Newton among NFL rookies. Only Peyton Manning, with 26 in 1998, has more.

Wilson had 92 yards rushing to give him 402 on the season, setting a Seahawks record by passing Rick Mirer, who had 343 yards rushing in 1993. He also went 14 of 23 for 205 yards before giving way to backup Matt Flynn with 5 minutes left.

Wilson ran circles around the Bills (5-9), who were entirely outclassed in being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for a 13th season. That's the NFL's longest active drought. And their performance further raises questions about coach Chan Gailey's job security.

C.J. Spiller scored on a 14-yard run, while Stevie Johnson scored on a 20-yard catch from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

This was an utter meltdown by a Bills defense that had allowed an average of 16.75 points and 254.25 yards offense over its past four games. Buffalo's now allowed 45 or more points three times this season.

The Seahawks scored 31 points on their first five possessions, and 40 points on their first eight, a stretch in which Canadian-born Jon Ryan punted just once.

The Bills rallied by scoring 10 unanswered points in the final 1:10 of the first half to cut the Seahawks' lead to 31-17. But any chances of a comeback ended on Buffalo's first possession of the second half, when Fitzpatrick forced a pass over the middle and was intercepted by linebacker K.J. Wright, who returned it to the Bills 20.

Two plays later, Marshawn Lynch scored on a 13-yard run.

On the next possession, Fitzpatrick had the ball stripped from his hand by defensive end Chris Clemons and the fumble recovered by teammate Bruce Irvin. That led to Steven Hauschka hitting a 33-yard field goal to make it 40-17.

And then it got ugly.

Fitzpatrick turned the ball over a third straight time, when he was intercepted by Thomas. The touchdown was reviewed, and the crowd cheered loudly when referee Scott Green announced that Thomas had caught the ball before it hit the turf.

The announced crowd of 40,770 was well below the downtown domed Rogers Centre's capacity of 54,000.

The Bills dropped to 1-4 in regular-season games at Toronto since the series began in 2008, with their lone win coming last year when they beat Washington 23-0.

The Bills and Toronto-based Rogers Communications are closing in on a deal to extend the series, which expired after this game.

Torontonians might want to reconsider after this. With 5:20 left, fans in one end zone began chanting "Let's Go Blue Jays!"

At least they were entertained by both the Seahawks and at halftime by Korean pop star PSY performed his hit "Gangnam Style" at midfield. Many fans stuck around and stood during the performance, with some doing the dance the song has inspired.

Bills in Toronto series organizers hired PSY to perform in a bid to boost ticket sales for a game that has had difficulty selling out over the previous four years. PSY was greeted by loud cheers and performed in front of a group of cheerleaders and youngsters dressed in blue shirts who all wore PSY-styled sunglasses.

The crowd was slow-arriving and featured a wide diversity of NFL fans. While there were numerous fans dressed in Bills and Seahawks colors, fans were spotted wearing a Steelers' Troy Polamalu jersey, and another wearing a Tom Brady No. 12 Patriots jersey.

The Seahawks wore their third uniforms ? "wolf grey" jerseys and pants with green numbers and names ? for the first time since introducing them this offseason.

Humanoid robot flexes its 160 muscles for creepy realism

14 hrs.

Robots that look like people?are nothing new, but not all of them truly aim to imitate the human body. The Kenshiro robot, an ongoing project at the University of Tokyo, aims to simulate a person right down the muscles and bones.

Kenshiro is the latest in a series that started with Kenta, a robot made to imitate, in simplified form, most of the human body's musculature. A quasi-futuristic shell and staring eyes gave it a slightly nightmarish appearance, but the robot itself was groundbreaking. With about 100 cables and motors, it simulated dozens of muscle structures.

Now, the upgraded and renamed version has 160 pulley-like robo-muscles ? more than any other humanoid robot in the world. There are 76 in the torso, 22 in the neck, 25 in each leg, and 12 in each shoulder. The many muscles and tendons governing the face, hands, and feet are left out or grossly simplified, being at present too complex to include.

The result is a headless skeleton that may or may not be more terrifying than its predecessor. But seeing it in motion is what really drops you into the uncanny valley:

While some movements are still halting and lack the fluidity of smaller, more purpose-built systems like artificial hands or legs, the human quality of Kenshiro's motion?is difficult to deny.

The muscles, bone structure and spine are meant to work and flex the way ours do, not just accomplish similar tasks.?The idea is to eventually build a robot that not only looks like a human or can work in the same space as humans, but one that actually moves and acts using the same principles and mechanisms.

That means striking a balance between weight, power?and speed. Our own bodies are marvels of efficiency and elegance (notwithstanding a few bum evolutionary hand-me-downs), so matching it will be no easy task. Kenshiro is made to have about the size and weight of a 120-pound human male, but the motors and materials necessary to produce a similar range of movement and power?would make the robot too heavy.

The leader of the project, Yuto Nakanishi, is (among other things)?currently working on his team's entry to the DARPA Robotics Challenge, in which several leading robot makers are working to create a humanoid rescue?robot. Chances are that the next time Kenshiro gets a big update, it'll have more than a little competition.

Grilled Lamb Skewer at Daddy Jones - Restaurant Reviews

If there's a word that annoys me in restaurant reviews, it's "authentic," as the writer is usually assuming some authority on the cuisine that is probably unmerited. But I like it just fine when used to describe how a place feels, as in sincere: not arch, like the hipster joint that winkingly apes a dive bar, or pretentious, like the restaurant that thinks a velvet rope makes it "upscale and exclusive." Authentic joints pursue their chosen concepts without irony. Among my favorites of this type is the modest local bar with very good food and drinks and a minimum of high-concept cuteness. That pretty much describes the new Daddy Jones in Magoun Square.

For example, Daddy Jones features updates on retro dating-bar drinks like the '60s-vintage Harvey Wallbanger ($10, here using ice cubes made from OJ and subbing ouzo and amaretto for Galliano) without feeling the need to hang blacklight posters. Its Greyhound ($9) returns this classic highball to its original gin and grapefruit base and adds hints of thyme and honey, with tasty results. The Dirty Dill Infused Gin ($9) reads like a very dry martini; a garnish of pickled green bean, olive, and cocktail onion practically makes it a boozy hors d'oeuvre. The beer list leans crafty, with six drafts ($5?$7) and 15 in cans and bottles ($4?$6, large format $16?$18). Most of the thoughtful 19-bottle list of wines ($25?$40) is available by the glass ($8?$10). This includes bargains like the 2010 Elios Mediterranean White ($34/$9), a crisp, lemony moschofilero/chardonnay blend from the Peloponnese, and the 2011 Bodegas Volver Tarima Monastrell ($30/$8), an inky, spicy-hot red from Jumilla.

The short menu centers on home-style Greek classics, executed sensationally. Appetizers include beautiful stuffed phyllo ($6), fried turnovers of spinach, mushrooms, and cheese with a thin red-pepper dipping sauce. Dip & pita ($6) puts wedges of excellent grilled flatbread around coral-tinged whipped feta and roasted pepper, at once bright and briny. House-made smoked herring ($5), served atop grilled romaine with fried capers, lemon, and olive oil, is one memorable little starter: intensely salty and smoky, with a hint of open-flame char. Among the mid-courses is roast stuffed baby eggplant ($8) filled with a mix of ground beef, rice, and a few peas under a light blanket of roasted red pepper and melted kasseri, flanked with cherry tomatoes and sprinkled with fried parsley: hearty and delicious.

Entr?es include a superb grilled sausage sandwich ($8) of first-rate loukaniko (a Greek pork sausage accented with orange peel and fennel seed), caramelized onions, and roasted peppers, wrapped in pita alongside excellent hand-cut fries (a few of which are also tucked into the sandwich). It's dressed with a fabulous tzatziki of thick Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and lemon. The grilled lamb skewer ($14) could not be simpler: big chunks of rich, slightly chewy, cooked-to-order marinated lamb alternating with red onion and peppers atop grilled transverse slices of eggplant and zucchini and a turmeric-tinged pilaf, with more of that fine tzatziki on the side.
